Building Tabletop Water Fountains with Children
Now that school is back in session there will be projects and moms will be tearing their hair out for innovative ideas to help out their little geniuses! This would be a great time to start looking at the items necessary to build tabletop water fountains with children of all school ages.
You can start by getting a small pump from the aquarium section of your pet store or at a hardware store. You will also need a 6-10 inch length of tubing from the same source.
Now comes the creative part which is finding just the right container. You could start with a plastic bowl or steel like in a stainless steel salad bowl if thats all you have. A ceramic bowl is perfect or a great copper bowl which may be a bit too expensive for children’s projects initially. A wooden bowl or a plastic bowl like you use for popcorn works very well in an experimental stage but something a bit weightier bowl is better in the long run.
Another creative aspect of building a tabletop fountain with your child is the seeking of interesting stones of various sizes but not too large. You could get a wagon full and then have a variety to choose from depending on the size of the container and the color of the container. The rocks can be from different places where you’ve been collecting or from the arts and crafts store if you want totally new and clean looking. Finding them outside would be more fun though and an interesting part of the creative process. Stones found along creeks and water beds are usually interesting and smooth and also tend to have a good variety of natural color. You will use more of the river rock type stone but you will need at least of couple of the neatest larger rocks too.
One idea might be to take the children to a store like Target or Lowes to get some great visuals and see the various tabletop water fountains on display made from the kits so they can see the various parts and how they fit together. Also take a look online to see pictures and fire up their imaginations and yours with the amazing selection of designs, then decide on some interesting and fun additions to your own tabletop water fountain.
A ceramic frog or some neat pieces of bamboo are always good for kids. A small statue of any kind or a couple of small ceramic cups to increase the sound of the water flow as it travels.
The kids will come up with their own ideas and they will love this project. It is fun for everyone and as they grow, the creativity that goes into this kind of creation will never be forgotten and may start them on a creative path that will last a lifetime.
This is art Mom!
